Rushmore Celebrates Black History Month
During October, we celebrated Black history Month with workshops and lessons.
Nursery and Reception classes discovered the story of Floella Benjamin’s life as she travelled from Trinidad to London as part of the Windrush Generation. Every other class took part in workshops around the thought provoking theme of “Protest; if not now then when?’
Each year group also learnt, in a series of lessons, about the huge contribution black people have
made towards British history and the society we live in:
Year 1: Yinka Shonibare, a British-Nigerian artist, whose work explores cultural identity.
Year 2: The history of the Notting Hill Carnival.
Year 3: Inspirational people such as Water Tull who became the first British-born, black
professional football player in England.
Year 4: The influence of black musicians and composers on music in the UK.
Year 5: The impact of The Black Arts Movements.
Year 6: The contribution soldiers from the Caribbean made during the First World War and other
conflicts
