PE Lead: Cherrelle Gray
PE at Rushmore Primary School
At Rushmore we love PE!
We are committed to providing the best opportunities for children to develop their physical competence, confidence, and ability to perform in a range of activities. We encourage children to participate in a range of physical activity and develop skills and awareness of the effect exercise has on their bodies. We promote positive attitudes towards active and healthy lifestyles.
PE Curriculum
The National Curriculum for Physical Education aims to ensure that all pupils:
- Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
- Are physically active for sustained periods of time
- Engage in competitive sports and activities
- Lead healthy active lifestyles
Each year, we will be review our curriculum map to ensure that children are engaging in a variety of popular and alternative sports enabling them to develop the above skills.

Funding
The Government has invested in improving physical education and sport in primary schools by introducing the sports premium grant. As a school we received approximately £19,000 to help improve the provision for PE and sport at Rushmore.
We have spent this money on:
- Investing in new equipment and resources to support learning
- Providing additional after-school extra-curricular sports clubs
- Promoting inclusive sports and alternative sport opportunities
- Promoting healthy competition and participating in borough-wide competitions
- Building on the EYFS provision with a focus on fundamental movement skills
- Trips to sporting events or venues
- Swimming interventions for those who are struggling to reach the expected standard.

Extra-Curricular
We currently run between 2 and 3 after-school sports clubs, every evening, across KS1 and KS2, to encourage children to enjoy physical activity and lead healthy lifestyles. They can participate in a range of physical activity including netball, BMX, wheelchair basketball, table tennis, tennis, football, street dance and multi-sports.

Swimming
Every Year group in KS2 attend swimming lessons. Years 3, 4 and 5 have weekly lessons for alternate half terms. Year 6 take part in intensive swimming lessons, in the spring term, every afternoon for a two week block.
Last year 95% of our year 6 pupils met the swimming objectives for KS2 swimming and many exceeded these expectations.
Sports Days
Every year during the summer term, we have our annual sports day. The children arrive at school in their house t shirts (PE kits) and travel to the local park to take part in a range of fun and competitive sports activities. House points are given to children in KS1 and KS2 for showing determination, passion, respect, honesty, self-belief and teamwork and for the order that they place in any of the games.
Hackney Moves Schools’ Challenge
The Hackney Schools’ Challenge is a youth running initiative, open to primary school children, organised by Limelight Sports. The Hackney Schools’ Challenge encourages students to run 12 miles in the lead up to the event. We break this down by asking the children in the Upper Phase to run a mile or 2 miles a week in school. Children in the Lower Phase run each of their miles at home. Students then participate in the Hackney Moves weekend by running the final celebratory mile course, which finishes on the Hackney Half finish line, completing their own half marathon.

Bike Around the Borough
Bike Around the Borough is a planned 8 mile route that takes young cyclists along a number of roads within Hackney and passes through Clissold Park and London Fields, before returning to Hackney Downs. Pupils who take part in the bike ride cycle on public roads and therefore require a good level of bike control. All pupils taking part should have a road worthy bike and be a competent rider. However, if your child is eligible for pupil premium funding but does not own a bike, we can provide this to ensure they can still take part.
Bikeability Training
We provide free Bikeability Training at Level 1 & 2 to our children in year five, which usually runs at the end of the first half term. This safe, structured and standardised programme is designed to make children competent cyclists and prepare them for eventually cycling on road.
